Average hours per week
When was the last time you asked yourself if you enjoy how you spend your time every day? The average person in Ireland sleeps for 49 hours a week (Health report, 2017), and works for 32.6 hours a week (CSO, Q2 2016), leaving just over half the week to other activities. From this, we need to take the daily 45.4 minutes average return commute, the 3 hours and 21 minutes to view TV, and the 50 minutes to scroll through facebook.
58pc of people enjoy how they spend their day.
Percent of group who enjoy their time
According to our most recent January State of the Nation research, most Irish people enjoy how they spend their time, however it is mainly those over the age of 55 (70pc of group), who are most likely to enjoy how they spend their time. Those retired from the public or private sector are 22pc more likely to say they enjoy how they spend their time.
The Work Effect
Are the retired enjoying themselves because they are no longer working, or because they have reached an age where they appreciate their time more? Are those in their twenties and thirties, who are least likely to enjoy how they spend their time, lacking a meaningful job or working too much, preventing them from other aspects of their life (e.g. hobbies, travelling or raising a family?)
Interestingly, after retired people, those working in a permanent part-time role are most likely to say they enjoy how they spend their days.
When we profile people based on their job description, we can see what sectors and industries are more or less likely to have workers who say they enjoy their days.
Carers and Makers
People who are working in health, social care, construction, education or retail say they enjoy how they spend their time. While all of these sectors have their own issues - lack of funding, opportunities and stressful seasons - it seems those who look after others or create something are more likely to enjoy how they spend their time.
3 in 4 people would consider a new job
Despite the majority of people saying they enjoy their time, there is still 42% of the population who don't enjoy or are on the fence about how they spend their time every day. Following on from this sentiment, there is a large percentage of the population (73%) who say they would be open to new job opportunities.
Understanding the reasons why people want to move job or stay with their current job is a crucial task. Businesses need to measure employee satisfaction, not only to create employees who are happy with how they spend their time, but who also become brand advocates in a competitive market place.
